Simple Goals for the First Race
Set your sights on being able to complete the distances for your first race in one training day. Try to accomplish this at least two weeks from your race.
Example: you are entered in the September Hyannis Sprint 2 Triathlon. On, around or by August 15, take a day to swim 1/4-mile (18, 25-yard out-and-back lengths of a pool), bike 10 miles and run 3.5 miles. Split it up during the day...or, better yet, do the events back-to-back-to back for the full experience.

Sage Advice for First Timers
My top five quips of wisdom:
1) Family and health first and foremost. Don't let the sport put you out of balance.
2) Listen to your body and watch your clock. If you're tired or hurt, take time off. If you just don't have the time today, don't push it.
3) From the lips of Joan Nagle...'Compete To Complete'!
4) Simply, 'Have Fun!'
5) It is race day...leave your watch on the bedroom dresser. Let the experience, not time, be your guide for triathlon numero uno.
Race Week Minus One
Relax and downplay the race coming up over the weekend. The tendency may be to get 'riled-up'. The race is nothing more than another training day...with a couple of bricks tossed in...and a few training partners. Remember why you are racing. Go out and have fun...compete to complete...don't worry about time.
